Certainly being the only girl changes the social dynamic when the rest of the cast are boys. There is a sexual element that affects the narrative. Ironically the author does not pursue this in great detail. Teresa is the only female character in almost the entire book, yet she serves little purpose except to catalyze plot and Thomas's character development.
