Henchard is pretty one dimensional. He does't address the deeper context of situations, rather he merely declares certain vows not meaning to deal with the nature of them. One example is is vow to not touch a drop of alcohol for 21 years. When the time is up, Henchard doesn't merely grab a beer, he gets completely drunk with three mariners.
