Happiness is rare and fleeting in this drama. Henchard is happy to have his family back, but the reality isn't what he imagined. After Susan's death, Henchard is happy to reveal his fatherhood to Elizabeth, only to quickly learn that his own daughter is dead... that Newsome is, in fact, Elizabeth's father.
