analyse the charrecter of the mayor of casterbridge

michael henchard in the novel is introduced in the novel as a 21yr. old young hay trusser.He is the chief character in the novel. In fact he is the most powerfully drawn character of hardy. As Abercromabie remarks,he is "the greatest instance of masculine characterisation in hardy's fiction." He is concived as a 'man of character' by his creator. His character can easily be summed up in one sentence uttered by Lucetta, "that he is a hot tempered man,a little proud perhaps ambitious;but not a bad man."
