Antonio is very biased against Shylock because Shylock is a Jew and has a bad reputation as a moneylender. Antonio guarantees the loan of Bassanio; Shylock is skeptical because Antonio's money is sitting in risky investments. They agree that the interest on the loan if it is not repaid will be a pound of Antonio's flesh.
