    Ivan's disinterest appears to stem from two places: the torment he received when first attempting to explain Berlioz's death and the continual sedation he has received since being at the hospital. Students can note that Ivan no longer appears to be "split in two," but instead is the new passive, quasi-logical version of himself. The old Ivan appears to have disappeared completely.
