In the novel's first chapter, Ohio is in the midst of a cold and blustery winter..... the Midwest at its best. Nearby in a launching field, a rocket takes off, leaving a fiery trail behind it, which turns the falling snow to heated rain, and the banks of snow on the landscape into a wet soggy mess. The people in Ohio think of this event as "Rocket Summer".
