There was only one woman in the story, one woman present in the camp of men. From the text, we can infer that her role was sexual. She'd gone to the camp because she'd been isolated due to a transgression. She is also with child and in labor. After the child's birth and Sal's subsequent death, the men ponder how they can take care of the infant. They talk about taking the child to a reservation...... or bringing in a woman, but that a decent woman wouldn't come, and "they didn't want any more of the other kind."
