This was answered before. Prufrock isn't your classic stoic alpha-male. He symbolic of the modern man. Prufrock is overeducated, neurotic, sensitive (overly sensitive?), articulate and poetic. He muses about missed opportunities and questions unresolved about the opposite sex. This is the new man, not strong and silent but vulnerable and accessible. He represents the modern man by openly displaying disillusionment and vulnerability, "I have measured out my life in coffee spoons." Prufrock is not a strong and conquering alpha male rather than a pathetic figure trying to find where his manhood went wrong.
