Why has she chose common characters for her story?

Why has Jackson chosen common people for her chaeacters? Cold she have chosen characters from other levels of sophistication with the same effect? What is the irony of the tone of the story?

Jackson is trying to illustrate the "heard mentality" of the uneducated and ucultural class. They are hard working but lack the critical skills to think independently in the face of social conformity. Other types of characters would not express the idea of blind devotion to tradition.
