The black box used to be a symbol of the lottery. It was ornate and defined. Now the box is old faded wood. This speaks to the erosion of tradition and identity of the ceremony. The people are only interested in the sacrifice. Old Man Warner is the only person who has a vague idea about why the Lottery was ever held in the first place.
