Old Man Warner's remark is perhaps the only clue that we get for the Lottery's origins. Most villagers have long forgotten the reasons for the lottery but conformity and tradition keep the practice going. Old man Warner states "lottery in June, corn be heavy soon. '' The idea being that if the villagers sacrificed someone in June, then they would have a good harvest so their food needs would be taken care of in the weeks and months to come.
