Conformity is a major theme in the story. I think the theme or message has to do with conformity without thinking and following tradition because we are expected to. The townspeople do not examine the reasons for the lottery. Certainly many of them would not like the practice. Fear of standing out or opposing the status quo prevents them from changing.
