The irony in the story can be found in its title, and thus, the perceptions of the reader. We assume a lottery to be an exciting, pleasurable event, filled with anticipation. It isn't until the end of the story, that we realize our error..... the reader expects something good to come of it..... and then we find out that the lottery directs the taking of a life.
