The Lottery and Other Stories

What information is being withheld throughout The Lottery by Shirley Jackson?

The story is told in straight forward chronological fashion. As you read, it feels like information is being held back. What is being withheld? Why?

The information held back is the nature of the lottery itself. We read about the children collecting rocks in their pockets, and how rocks are piled into piles in the square, but we don't know they're intending as murder weapons in a stoning.
