were you surprised by the ending of the story?if not, at what point did you know what was going to happen? how does Jackson foreshadow the ending?

The first time I read this, many years ago; I was surprised by the ending. I did not clue into all of the foreshadowing which now seems pretty obvious to me. Mr. Adams observes that some of the other towns in the region have started talking about doing away with the lottery. This suggests that a similar lottery exists and was objectionable in some way. The rocks being collected and the general dark mood and tone foreshadowed something sinister behind the lottery.
