The lottery

In what ways are the characters differentiated from one another? Looking back at the story, can you see why Tessie Hutchinson is singled out ass the "winner"

Characters are separated by gender, age, and family. Tessie comes across as rather flippant about the lottery. She pretends she was doing dishes and "forgot" about the meeting. In reality nobody forgets the lottery because they, or a loved one, can be killed. Tessie's dismissive tone makes her being chosen all the more ironic and dramatic.
