Some critics insist that the story has an added symbolic meaning. Do you agree?

Jackson is pointing out a human need to conform as well as the grim fascination we have with watching others suffer. The story of course was and still is controversial. Like William Golding's Lord of the Flies, the reader must question how much darkness lies in the human condition.
