The Lottery and Other Stories

in "the lottery" where is it shown that the wickedness of ordinary people can be just as horrifying as the heinous crime of a cereal killer or a sadistic head of state

please help this is an assessment (80% of my grade)

The fact that someone gets pelted to death by stones because of a tradition that nobody could explain is pretty heinous. Friends and neighbours kill each other for a tradition that no longer has a meaning.
