how does the author use mystery, tension, and suspense to help provide the theme to the story?

The tension is evident in the reactions of the townspeople as family names are chosen..... and the absence of the black dot becomes a signal for relief. Suspense is present throughout the story, notably because we don't know what we're waiting to find out. It's a mystery until the end.
