I believe Jackson foreshadows the lottery's violent end when the Hutchinson family begins to panic, and the people in the crowd "hope" it isn't Nancy. The final nail in the coffin comes when Mrs. Hutchinson reacts by telling them they need to start the drawing process over again. At this point, we understand that the winner is not a winner.
