One possible allusion can be found in Old Man Warner's saying, "Used to be a saying about 'Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon." This allusion implies that the lottery is an age old tradition. As we later come to understand it is in fact a human sacrifice like those throughout history, made with the intent of currying the gods' favor for a good harvest.
