The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Frodo says that it was a pity that filbo didn't kill him. How does grandalf reply to this statement and what does frodo learn from grandalfs comments?

I read the book but didn't quite understand it please answer if can!

I think you mean Bilbo and Frodo is referring to Bilbo killing Grendel when he had the chance. Gandalf replies "Yes, it was pity. Pity and mercy."
