I have only read The Drover's Wife. Australia comes through in all its majesty and uniqueness through voice and tone. THe harsh environment give the women of this setting a stalwart heroic almost mythic voice. This story developed the identity of women, like the Drover's wife, as survivors in an impossible setting. Here there is nothing but bleak isolation. The bush has “no horizon” and their houses are built with inferior "stringy bark”. The result is some pretty tough bush women who are every bit as tough as the harsh environment.
