The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

why does the story follow aslan, lucy, and susan as they rescue the people turned into statues, leaving peter and edmund to fight the battle offstage? What makes the rescue party more interesting and important than the army?

This story is a Christian allegory. The rescuing of the statues is the rescuing of souls through the love and sacrifice of Christ or Aslan. This is the point of the story rather than violent confrontation.
