Does Lakunle propose any meaningfully progressive options for the "modern" perspective?

I personally do not credit the character of Lankunle with progressive options. He claims to desire the modernization of the village, and he wishes to make Sidi a modern wife. He does not, however, view her as his equal, thus, we are left to wonder exactly what he evisions. Sidi and Sadiku are each presented as independent women, who are opinionated and unafraid of voicing those opinions. Unfortunately, their indepedent thinking doesn't interfere with status as mere pawns in the games of men. Sidi is powerless against Baroka's manipulation. He rapes her, marries her, and views her as nothing more than another possession.
