Percy is a twelve year old boy from Queens, NY. He has dyslexia and attention deficit disorder, and he has been kicked out of six different schools over the past six years. Riordan wants to point out that children with such conditions have something extra ordinary within them to give to the world. Riordan's own sun suffers from the same things Percy does. Greek Mythology helped his son become interested in fiction and mythic narratives.
