David Parkin finds himself struggling with important questions about the women in his life, who he feels have left him. These women include his mother Rose, his daughter Andrea, and his wife Mary Anne. His quest to find his mother and perhaps understand what has happened helps him explain his own feelings for his mother, his grief over his daughter's death, and ultimately find love again for his wife. As he figures out his feelings, he completes at least part of his quest.
