Why would it have been crazy fr Ichabod to be open about his feeling for Katrina?

Ichabod was Katrina's music teacher and her father is a wealthy land owner. It would not have been propper to let his feelings be known. She was also much younger than Ichabod. The local young strong man Brom Van Brunt had his eye on Katrina as well.
