Crane's interactions with his neighbor were cordial but lacking in intimacy. He had no close friends, and although he was considered a good teacher, helpful boarder, and witty storyteller, no one really knew him. Ichabod was a disciplinarian with his students, but he was also their companion in play, and an affectionate if strict taskmaster.

Ichabod boarded in his student's homes and assisted with the household chores. He helped fathers in the fields, entertained the children while their mother's worked, made the young ladies smile, and listened for gossip to share, in addition to his storytelling.
