The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

What does the author’s choice to tell the story through the voice of such a familiar and chatty narrator contribute to the overall meaning of the text?

I think this gives the reader a sense that they have an inside perspective on the village and the strange goings on. The familiarity validates the narrator's perspective.
