Brom is a textbook example of a character foil to Ichabod. Both illuminate each other’s traits. Brom is physically everything Ichabod is not. He is burly, strong, big, a good rider...he's sort of the popular high school football jock if there were high school or football in this village. Ichabod is weak, skinny intelligent, uptight and generally the nerdy victim if we use the high school analogy. Yes Brom would kick sand in Ichabod's face on the beach. Brom is a native of these parts where Ichabod is a strange outsider.
