The Last Unicorn is a fantasy novel written by the American author Peter Beagle. Published in 1968, the novel had a short novelette following it, Two Hearts. The novel, originally published by Viking Press, is about a unicorn that believes there are no others of her species left on Earth. The unicorn embarks on a quest to find the others, trying to find out what might have happened. Selling more than 5 million copies worldwide, the book has been translated into more than 20 languages. Some say the book is one of the best fantasy novels ever written based on a 1987 survey.
Peter S. Beagle was born on April 20, 1930, and has done work in both novels and screenwriting. This book is his best known work. Born in Bronx, New York, he graduated from the Bronx High School of Science in 1955. The Last Unicorn was his third book published, and was made into an animated film in 1982. He has won the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, and the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement.
