What themes do you see starting to develop? What might be the author’s message about the theme?

I think the main theme is guilt and redemption. Hassan's rape seems even more emotionally scarring on Amir than on Hassan. Amir's guilt for not helping his friend is a cross he bears for the entire book. He searches for redemption and only finds some at the end of the book.
