Amir wants to redeem himself in Baba’s eyes. Not only does Amir feel small in his father's eyes but he also wants to make up for his mother's death during his birth. Hassan desperately wants to be worthy in Amir's eyes and will do anything "a thousand times over" to be worthy of Amir's friendship.
