Amir describes his family home as being lavish amongst much surrounding poverty. The home had rosebushes, marble floors, mosaic tiles, and gold-stitched tapestries and even a crystal chandelier. These riches, however, do not make Amir happy. There is juxtaposition between happiness and wealth that Amir struggles with throughout the novel.
