Amir is living in New York City, thinking back on the time that changed his life. The time was the winter of 1975..... the place was Kabul, Afghanistan.

Amir lives in America, New York City in chapter 1. In chapter 2 he is recalling himself in Kabul, Afghanistan as a child. His life changed in the winter of 1975 because that is when he had seen his best friend Hassan getting raped. He had kept quiet about it and kept in his guilt which changed his life.
