The ending simply provides hope. Amir and Sohrab flying their kite in America is a shred of innocence reclaimed from a violent and guild ridden past. The horrific rape and violence that has plagued both Amir and Sohrab will never go away. Amir's guilt over forsaking Hassan still lingers even after the beating he takes from Assef. At least the last scene offers hope of a new beginning.
