How did Amir comfort Hassan when the soldiers make fun of his mother?

This is a touching moment. After the soldiers suggest very crude things about Hassan's mother the two boys go to the theatre. In the darkened room Amir gently puts his arm around the sobbing Hassan and whispers, "They took you for someone else." Hassan knows this is not true.
