There are a few things to consider here. I will deal with the main one. Early in the novel Hassan refuses to give Assef, a local bully, Amir's kite. Payback is swift. Amir witnesses the rape of his friend Hassan in an allyway and does nothing to intervene. Guilt haunts Amir for much of the novel. Amir feels it most keenly in America where he has moved to. Complete atonement is ellusive but Amir does try. After Hassan and his wife are murdered by the Taliban, their son Sohrab is an orphan. Amir returns to Afghanistan at great peril to himself. Their he confronts Assef who is now Taliban and has taken Sohrab. Amir gets beaten to a pulp. Ironically, while Amir feels his bones break, he laughs. This is part of his atonement, it is the intervention he should have done as a child. Eventually Amir takes Sohrab back to America to raise him; this is his final mea culps (sort of atonement) to his friend Hassan.

How about again with fewer spelling mistakes!
