Of course a story called 'The Kite Runner' could have existed without the class differences between Amir and Sohrab, but it would be unrecognizable compared to what we now know as the story. It is absolutely crucial to the plot that Sohrab is the son of a servant and Amir the son of a wealthy landowner.
