Amir cannot live with himself after Hassan's rape. His self-loathing becomes almost palpable. Baba's insecurities about Amir's masculinity become validated. Amir regresses even further into his own pain. He attempts to appease the pain by being mean to Hassan but Hassan is too full of goodness to ever forsake Amir. This just makes Amir hate himself even more.
