In chapter 14 of the book Kite Runner, why does Hosseini paint such a vivid image of the streets in Peshawar?

When Amir returns to Afghanistan, it is not the same place he had left. There is more of a harsh militeristic sense to it. The sights, sounds, and smells are different. Hosseini does thos to show both the change in Afghanistan as well as the change in Amir.
