Chapter 13

General Taheri, Soraya's father, is a former general who prefers collecting welfare to lowering himself to a blue collar job. Baba refuses welfare and tries to work at jobs beneath him until he dies. Both long for the past and want to return to Afghanistan. They were both men of social standing in their home country: in America they feel isolated and estranged from their values.
