Although Amir is critical of many cultural practices, he is sure that every man needs a woman. I think the distinction Amir might agree with is that not every man deserves a woman. Amir is kind at heart and supports Sorraya. They complement each other. We cannot say the same for the Taheri's marriage. General Taheri is, at times, abusive towards his wife. A reader might have the feeling that the General does not deserve her.
