Amir frequently reads to Hassan. Hassan is illiterate so Amir fills Hassan's mind with stories of adventure. Amir truly wants Hassan to feel the joy of these stories but also uses them to manipulate Hassan. We must understand that Amir's intense self-loathing is projected onto Hassan. Amir often belittles Hassan to make himself feel better than garbage. Of course, this never works but Amir does use these stories to humiliate or make fun of Hassan.
