Hassan takes the blame for Amir. Hassan's sacrifice for Amir is a reoccurring motif in the novel. Hassan will not permit Amir to get in trouble even if Amir is the one who put him up to it. Hassan feels his station in life is to serve and protect Amir, even when Amir proves cruel and cowardly. Ironically, Hassan's sacrifices only increase Amir's self-loathing and he continues his abuses of Hassan.
