Amir remembers someone once saying, "There are a lot of children in Afghanistan, but little childhood." What does this mean?

Amir is referring to the fact that childhood innocence in almost nonexistent....... the danger, and the violence...... serve to turn little boys into men far before they are ready. They have no childhood.
