What are a few examples of Jurgis’ belief in the self-made man and how they are shown in the story?

Jurgis initially buys into the idea of the American dream. He subscribes to the notion that hard work and individual spirit will lead to material success and happiness. Jurgis, however, finds this idea is little more than illusion. He suspects this when they are sold a sub standard house for more money than they can afford.
