Tommy Hinds has money and a hotel but uses them to spread his Socialist message. He operates his hotel on a collective platform. He respects Jurgis and Jurgis works hard for him. The hotel is a contrast to the packinghouses. Tommy brings a dream of cooperation and fairness into Jurgis's life.
